Moonflower Snail

As daylight fades and the garden grows quiet, the Moonflower Snail begins to stir.

Moonflower Snails spend their days tucked beneath broad leaves and in cool hollows near moonflower vines. At dusk, they emerge and settle beneath the tightly furled blossoms, where they may wait patiently for hours.

Long ago, naturalists believed these little snails caused the moonflowers to bloom.

We now know they are doing something quieter.

They are waiting for them.

Moonflower Snails know the rhythm of the vines so well that they seem to recognize when a blossom is nearly ready to open, even before there is any visible change. As the flowers unfurl into the night, the snail begins its slow journey beneath them, feeding on fading petals and fallen plant matter while moths visit the blossoms overhead.

Its enchanted shell carries pale moonflowers of its own, a tiny reflection of the nighttime garden it calls home.

By morning, the Moonflower Snail has disappeared beneath the leaves again.

So if you happen upon one waiting beneath a closed moonflower at dusk, leave them to their watch.

Something is about to bloom.
